Northern Rock bailed out by Bank of England

hi all , just home from NR with mothers cheque in hand. Waited around town for 7 hours but did spend 4 of that in the pub waiting to collect the cheque so wasnt too bad.

Now just have to lodge it and wait for it to clear.
phew!

Just logged in for first time in two days to see how my account closure is going. I got in on Saturday morning to close my account. No reply to my secure message sent sundayfrom Northern Rock and my account has disappeared!!!. Just a note saying I won't see anything until I open an account. Is this standard practice. I know I'm closing the account but I should be able to see the progress of my EFT. Instead I get a message saying I don't have an account.

Has anyone else had this problem???

PS The message I get is as follows:

This page lists your Northern Rock accounts. There are currently no accounts to display until your new account application is processed.

Re: Northern Rock and online banking capacity

Is there anyone on here who has left money in Northern Rock? I have a small amount in Northern Rock and thought about withdrawing it. It is in the UK but Im currently in ireland and will not be returning for a few weeks.
I've not withdrawn anything, but as I've mentioned previously I've also savings with Rabodirect (More or less depending on what they do with their rates in January) & with the Halifax Monthly Saver. About half my total savings are in Northern Rock at the moment as such.

Yes - this happens sometimes. Happened to me. See previous posts. I logged on again later and the account was back. Interest added. Tax deduced. Money transferred to nominated account. Not actually in that account yet.

Thanks Ohno,

You've reassured me somewhat.

Again, what a bunch of clowns! Their IT service has been a disgrace for sometime as askew70 has been arguing. I've sent several secure mails which have been ignored.

I was worried I ticked the box "dissatisfied with service" when closing the account. I thought it was the financial services version of spitting in my soup when I complain.

I know of several people leaving money in Northern Rock. Its safer than the Irish financial institutions. Full stop.

Hi Snowy,
What a great relief it must now be for you and your Mother.
Hope you didn't spend it all in the pub beforehand!!!

I withdrew 3.15 am on Saturday but the transaction is still marked pending. Since others who withdrew at the same time have received funds I felt a bit sore at the continuing stress. However, I got through on the phone today and was told the transfer was done yesterday and would arrive Wednesday or Thursday; just the pending notice wasn't updated (and still hasn't been). Do I believe him? Well, sort of. Hope this is of help to others in the same position.

By and large, it hasn't been too hard to get on to the site, I have found, largely thanks to Firefox and the tip from posters about the F5 button.

I've over €60,000 in NR and didn't touch any of it during the whole debacle. Still earning one of highest rates of interest around AND is partially guaranteed by both the law and FULLY GUARANTEED by the government of the United Kingdom.

If anyone can find me a more secure place for my money, please let me know!!

Congratulations to everyone who panicked and queued for their money and besieged the bank with requests and thus forced the UK Government to act in an unprecedented way and guarantee not only UK deposit accounts but also Irish deposits.

Last week the BOE refused to loan funds to Northern Rock if it was taken over - not the case this week
Last week nothing over £2000 on deposit was 100% guaranteed - not the case this week

Nothing like the power of people protecting their assets to force a Government and a Central Bank to act meaningfully and decisively to protect the assets of the people who are the raison d'etre for all economic systems.

The queuers, the phoners, the keyboard tappers - thank you all

Good for you sapmanie - and you are probably correct!

Hmmm...

When does the guarantee by the British taxpayer run out? In your opinion, is the current financial turmoil with NR over? ;)

I am also pleased to announce that any customer who has paid a penalty for withdrawing their investment, will have the penalty refunded if they re-invest the same amount in the same type of account by 5th October 2007.
What is this all about?

Surely, if you have paid for a service that you have not received you should be entitled to a refund?

How can conditions like these be imposed? This is nothing short of nonsense in contract terms.

(I didn't pay the €25 so it doesn't make any difference to me on a personal basis)

I would think it had to do with penalties associated with anyone requesting immediate widthdrawl on the 30 day or 60 day demand accounts

I never thought I'd ever see a bank run in modern day Ireland, never mind be in one. I thought it was for black and white films, and I always thought they were for "panicers". Now I know better. On the plus side I'd say a lot of us are little older and wiser because of this. I used to be amused at the thought of old people keeping money in the mattress . . now I'm not so sure.

I've no problem gambling some of my money on the odd share . . .but my deposit money that I need quick and easy access to in the short term - that's a different story.

On a lighter note, for those of you, like me, waiting to log in to Northern Wreck to see if your transfer is complete, have a look at this old clip on You Tube.

I haven't done anything about moving my cash out of Northern Rock - I just don't see that there's anything to panic about, when all NR did was to arrange the use of an overdraft, if they got stuck at some point in the future. I may reduce my savings below E50k at some point in the next couple of weeks, but I had been intending to open a Halifax account anyway and this run is a reminder to me to get a move on with the forms...

I think that this run has no precedence. I would imagine that a far greater proportion of money was withdrawn (despite the online problems) over the internet/phone than from the branches in England or HO in Dublin.

The hidden run ruled on this occasion.

We shouldnt brush off what happened too lightly

George Osborne, the UK shadow chancellor, said he found it "extraordinary" that Gordon Brown could claim that the government had acted decisively. "The Chancellor has allowed the first bank run in living memory to take place and spent four days in indecision and confusion," he said. "We may have to live with the consequences for many years to come."
