Non domiciled and CGT? Tax return necessary?

Thanks Nordkapp

It looks interesting - and I'll buy it as a present - although it presumably doesn't address the specific issue in question?

I was trying to avoid ringing up my man in PwC - he'll be able to find out definitively (which is good) but he knows how to bill me also (which is not so good!)

C'est la vie, je suppose....

I got it free! Basically I downloaded their summary leaflet, then got the usual calls and asked for the book in order to appraise the country further. Book duly arrived. Heading to the "A place in the Sun exhibition" this May in London for a look see on property in South of France and Italy. I have already warned the OH that these things are used as a shakedown, milk soon to be or already retirees with lots of moulah, going for the day out anyway!

Ah, je vois, dit l'aveugle!

Thanks for the tip re getting the free book. Alas, I'll not be getting a call - as, for the taster leaflet, I put in a sequence of digits which do not correspond to any of my phone numbers.....in order to avoid such helpful courtesy calls :D

Good look with your search for retirement bliss. Are you planning to acquire a holiday home or are you going to go "all in"?!

Better a large bill than a hefty fine and penalties is my reposte to that. (though I can't see how anybody is going to go after this in any of the tax offices as it's way too complicated and difficult to find)

Are we talking mega bucks in profits?

My dearest Bronte,

Better a large bill than a hefty fine and penalties is my reposte to that.

I'm not sure how to break it to you but the general gist of sites like this is that, on occasion, it can be useful to throw a question out there in the hope of getting useful information back - i.e. before resorting to paid advisers. Just a line of thought.... ;) All I'm was asking is whether anyone in these parts knew the specific law. Could you just imagine the health of my portefeuille if Gekko or McGibney were willing and able to provide a definitive answer to my question?! Of course, I sincerely regret my behaviour and I hereby solemnly promise never again to pose such a question as, clearly, it was an outrageously inappropriate thing to do....:rolleyes: My bad, mea maxima culpa....

Now that said....

I'm very concerned by this inference. Surely, you are not in any way implying that the course of action should in the slightest way be influenced by the likelihood of detection?

Of course, I'm only teasing a little (......you know, every joke is a bit of a joke, the rest is the truth!)

Well you gave me a good laugh anyway and I could do with one the mood I'm in.

This might or might not help, in all my time on here I've never once seen anyone manage to figure out taxes accross 3 different countries. It would be rare the Irish accountant that would know the tax laws, UNLESS it is a 'procedure' that happens regularly. But Maybe Tommy McGibney in Donegal specialised in his final year in such types of case, I'd say there'd be big business in that neck of the woods (I think that's where he is)

We've to pay our own 'big' accountants Deloitte 1K to do a simple tax return this year and then we will never use them again. Due to historial reasons of our tax status which has recently changed, I need to put another year behind us in case they have some odd obscure question on previous tax returns (as happened to us once and cost us a lot just for Deloitte to write a letter to them - did the trick though, things are so much easier when you can read the forms in English and actually understand, a bit, what is going on)

Hey Bronte,

I'm glad some good has come out of all this frenetic waving of bags - fair play to ya! Sounds like we have a pouce? [It's how French folk agree a cease-fire.....by connecting thumbs.]

Hope de mood improves.......:D If it helps - I rang my man in PwC. Quelle surprise but he tells me that it "sounds straightforward BUT I'll have to look into it...."

Thank you all for your replies. I had not seen all these replies before today as unfortuantely I have experienced many months of severe health issues. Things are getting better now :).

@ Dan Murray. By any chance were you able to get some clarification from "your man" in PwC? It would be most appreciated.

Thanks and all the best.

Unless mistaken, I don't believe anyone has commented on the obligation to file a tax return in Ireland even if I am non domiciled and haven't remitted any sums of money into Ireland.
Thanks
