Non-availability of 5 litre water in supermarkets?

What's going on with these? Becoming harder to find in stock at supermarket/s.

Is it a production issue, boil water notices in specific affected areas leading to greater demand/scarcity or something to do with the exemption from the returns tax?

Yep same experience, staff at Tesco told me that they no longer carry them.
End up buying 1ltr bottle which means more annoying trips to recycle and get my money back.
Lidl are also hit and miss but at least they periodically have them in.
Can only imagine we are being herded into buying the I ltr size compatible for recycling....5 ltr won't fit obviously.

So, a negative outcome to a positive environmental move? More plastic in 5 1L bottles than 1 5L bottle?

Is there some financial wheeze for the supermarket if folk aren't doing the returns of the smaller sizes and just putting them in their bins?

We experienced the same for several months at Supervalu and Aldi. The SV manager told us that they keep ordering them- but they don't get them delivered. My wife asked Musgrave HQ in a mail- and was told that all our SV manager has to do is to order the bottles. Each was putting the blame on the other.

At Aldi's I was told that they ordered the 5 litre bottles from HQ- but they weren't coming. I was told this happens to a lot of stuff in Aldi as well. Some stuff is getting ordered all the time- but does not reach the shop for weeks. Then there are weeks in which they get anything they order. This is not about specific stuff- this could happen to anything.

There was no shortage of 5 litre bottles in our local Aldi nor SV shops for the last 3 weeks. But I could not find any in the local Tesco.

I think that people are fed up with the recycling charge they have to pay on the smaller bottles- and a lot of them switched to the 5 litre bottles to avoid the charge. This has led to a general shortage of 5 litre bottles and the producers were not fast enough to ramp up production. This might slowly change now.

Another theory I have is that those 5 litre bottles are really slowly taken out of the production to force people on the smaller bottles.

The water here in East Mayo is of low quality. It is very hard (full of lime) and has a strong taste of chemicals (fluoride, chloride) and is on many occasions discoloured.
There is a very strong demand for the bottles- I see basically everyone doing his/her weekly shopping having at least two or more 5 litre bottles in their trolley. This has been the case for many years- it is nothing new.

The Brita filters don't last very long. Main filters is an idea. But people don't think that way.
Besides that- the correct way would be eliminating the two number one water polluters: Slurry spreading farmers and septic tanks from single houses dotted all over the place!

People and suppliers adapt to these environmental rules and regulations.

A recent programme on DW TV was highlighting a situation in Germany.

There is a levy on single use plastic cutlery. The manufacturers have figured out a work around to beat the levy.

They have started to make the cutlery slightly thicker than the single use ones. These are classed as reusable and are not levied.

The result is that more plastic is now being dumped.

Dunnes has a restriction on the 5 litre bottles on its website:

And there is some discussion about it here:

More complaints here:

Because j have a green bin to put it in and should not have to store them and bring to a shop to stand in a queue
And like wise all homes are connected to the mains water supply and people shouldn't have to buy their water in a supermarket
but we live in a country where people and government don't always do what they are supposed to do
which leaves us all in a situation of doing things that we don't want to or shouldn't have to do
But that's life and people should just get with the program ;)

Isn't it weird then that the combined recycling rate of these containers through ReTurn and the green bins has almost doubled since the introduction of ReTurn?
Not at all. People need to reclaim their money.
