Hi. When we got our planning permission through, the only stipulation from the planners in Cork is that we cannot have white windows. We have to have black facia and soffits and black downpipes. It's a simple two storey farmhouse / country house design. We are not keen on brown, has anyone suggestions of different colour? what would ye think of black? Thanks for your thoughts.

A mate of mine built a new house on his own site in the country last year and fitted black pvc windows. Don't think it was a condition of planning but they look the business. Far better than the ubiquitus white.

Black is getting very popular at home in Co Waterford, lots of it, looks great.

If you look at the Cork County Council book of design (can't remember the name at the moment - could look around the office for it if necessary), you'll see that most of the houses included have strongly coloured windows.

Traditional Irish houses used to have very strongly coloured windows and doors as the only form of decoration.

Red and wine coloured looks great, also there are turquoise colours which also look great. (One of the houses in the Cork Book is designed by Orna Hanly - look at that).

Hi Superman, I think the book you are talking about is the Cork Rural Planning Guide - we have it, never even thought of looking at it for references. Thanks for your idea, I'll definitely look through it later! :)

Sparki,
we are planning our house now. The windows we are going for are Senator's Bog Oak.
Basically a wood effect, dark brown/ black PVC window.
We mightn't go for Senator; but I think they are good looking windows

Hi
We're building ourselves at the moment and checked loads of different colours etc. We decided on black windows, doors, facia & soffit (all in the bog oak wood effect) and have to say they look great, definitely the best choice. Most suppliers (large & small) seem to offer a wide variety of colours/styles.

We had to have wooden sash windows in our house ( planning stipulation) but the council agreed to let us order ones with aluminium cladding. We ordered ours from Marvin- in a dark green. We also have black aluminium fascia etc. Green is nice. Friends of ours obtained red ones from Marvin- they cost extra apparently- they are nice, maybe a little twee depending on the house. I like black too. Our neighbours ordered wood-effect pvc windows - I thought it would look horrible, but actually it looks quite nice.

I suppose the colour of window depends on the colour of the finish on the overall house. There is a company called Colorline that specialise in a wonderful range of coloured windows. And who knows maybe they could put together computer generated image of your house and change the colour of windows so you can view overall effect. If they dont do this maybe we could suggest they start!!

I think the black windows look the business especially in a country house/farmhouse type of building. Wouldn't worry about it at all.

Only problem with black windows and door is.................. well ask anyone who has a black car. have one myself, nighmare to keep clean. we looked at the black windows, but the more we looked we were eventually put off by the high visability of dirt effect. Went for oak woodgrain in the end, but still went for black fascia and soffets and by the way loved the black door so much , went for that too.. ! MAke sense ??????????. Wee black cars when clean do look the biz.

We used Roco in Waterford for our windows. We have just installed Alluminium Clad Timber Windows. They are a dark charcoal colour on the outside and a light oak / pine wood on inside. They are very complimentary to the house.

If we decide to go with dark brown / black windows, I'm assuming that means we also have to have the same colour throughout our sun room / conservatory - I'm just afraid that the sunroom would look too dark and perhaps the bar may look a little stark when looking from the inside out - that's my only reservation on the dark colours. Any thoughts welcome :)

If you put in timber windows and left them the natural wood colour for a few years or even paint them a colour of your choice, then you would have the choice a few years down the line to change colour or at least freshen the colour up. Also you could have black/red/yellow etc outside and white inside!

Wood windows would be nice, however because of the site location we will definitely be going with uPVC.

I got Black windows fitted and they really make a difference to the look of the house.

This company does pvc colour windows [broken link removed]

Thanks,
Richard

Is it important that the sun room / conservatory is the same colour as the windows in the house?

Or

Could you have black windows with house painted white with a white coloured uPVC conservatory? I haven't seen many around.
