No Control Over Debit Card Deductions

I remember not long ago the rules for DD where change because the payee had no control and could not stop or change payment, only the receipient or company receiving payment could stop them, thus always getting the payment in a dispute. Some companies now are taking regular monthly payments via a Debit card so we are back to the same arrangement where by only the recipient can stop or change it. We do not have control of our own money, I urge all persons not to take up this arrangement from personal experience
 
I didn't realise this. I logged in to my online AIB to investigate...... Below from my AIB online it says "Should you wish to amend your Direct Debit details, you should contact your Originator directly.
AIB do not have the authority to amend the details of your Direct Debit mandate."


There is a cancel option however....

After tentatively selecting the cancel option for one of my DD's, I got the message below... and I didn't proceed.

Important Information
By selecting "Confirm", you are authorising AIB to cancel the above direct debit and no further payments will be made by us under this mandate. It is your responsibility to inform the originator that you have cancelled the direct debit and to make any alternative payment arrangements necessary.
To ensure that associated payments are not processed, you should cancel your direct debit no later than 21:00 hours on the business day prior to the payment due date.



So I can't amend but I can stop/cancel. It makes sense not to amend for me as I can query a bill in time before the payment is taken and have the right to cancel the payment/mandate. A supplier such as Three will obviously amend monthly payments due as my mobile phone bill naturally varies every month.
 
Re card continuous payment authority, we're behind the UK on this one, where the FCA has confirmed that your card issuer must block payments at your request.

Here we've the opposite where it's written into you t&C's of your card that you must contact the merchant to cancel.

Personally I try to set these up via PayPal (e.g. Netflix), as PayPal gives you full control to cancel. Of course this only works for a few
 
I have a letter from the bank saying that they cannot cancel the arrangements that I made with the Merchant. My reply is I did not arrange with the Merchant to take money when I cancelled their service.
Just to clarify, this is from my Debit card and not a Direct Debit
 
Guess again, if you look at my other post you will see that I contacted them 9 time and got contradictory information
 
I booked a guest house for my wife in Oxford for 3 nights through Booking.com but when she arrived the place was like a building site.
Work men everywhere dust,dirt and building materials all over the place, my wife imediatley said she could not stay in a place like this
but the woman would only say that full payment was due as the time to cancel had elapsed. I went into my BOI branch and asked how I could stop payment to be told there was nothing they could do, I would just have to complain to the guest house and try to get a refund that way. They could't
even tell me if the guest house had tried to take money out. To me this is absolutley crazy that you can't stop a payment and protect yourself from being ripped off.

I didn't realise you could set up a regular payment using a debit card; something to be avoided it seems, thanks. If it's a normal DD you can just cancel it on internet banking and/or get a 'no questions asked' refund within 8 weeks under SEPA rules.

The suppliers are obviously going away from DD because people can stop payments in a dispute
