Hi

Anyone out there working for an NGO that has got their maternity pay topped up. I would love to know who does and who doesn't as i am about to broach my boss in next few weeks to break the news that I will be off for a few months... I would be really grateful for any feedback. PM if better...

Why specifically ask for someone from an NGO to contact you regarding pay and maternity leave?

You have no automatic entitlement to pay from employment while on maternity leave, the fact that some employers pay employees while they are on maternity leave comes down to your contract of employment.

While you are on maternity leave, you may qualify for Maternity Benefit, provided you have enough social insurance contributions.

Further information about Maternity Leave is available here. Information on [broken link removed].

I asked for people from the NGO sector to contact me as I wanted to see what was the norm in that sector. EG, to the best of my knowledge the banking sector (the well known high street companies) do top up pay. The norm in the hotel industry is not to top up pay. I just want to see in other peoples opinions what the norm is in the NGO sector . Is that not reasonable or are you just having a bad day or perhaps generally unhappy with yourself??

The purpose of AAM is to seek and receive objective advice from those with expertise on a variety of issues. I was providing objective information on your rights.

As I've explained above, employers aren't obliged to pay staff while on maternity leave, if they do, then that comes down to your contract of employment.

The fact that XYZ organisation in a particular sector pays/does not pay their staff on maternity leave has no impact on your right to pay. Telling your employer that people employed in XYZ organisation are paid while on maternity leave, has no impact on your situation if the provision is not in your contract of employment in the first place.

I am well aware of my rights and the rights of my employer. If I were not up to speed on these rights I may have asked a question concerning these issues rather than the question that I did ask. Also I don't intend to throw it up into my bosses face that XY&Z top up pay, I would just like to know myself. I never mentioned in my post that I wanted to use the information against my boss (I wouldn't dream of it).

So unless you have something relevant to contribute please don't just try to belong!!

Many thanks to the PMers for their insights. Thank you to CMCR for giving the raging hormones a headstart to the day. I'm sure my colleagues will thank you for it.

What a strange reply! Nothing in CMCR’s replies justify those comments.
Firstly, are you working in the NGO sector?
If so then the NGO sector is very diverse and not heavily unionised (like banking). Therefore top-up maternity payments by one or some NGO’s do not set a precedent.

Secondly, how exactly are you going to broach your boss? (Or do you mean that you will broach the subject of paid maternity leave with your boss?;))
