Hello,

I was recently married, i currently earn 65000 and new spouse on about 31000.
I was just wondering if anyone could explain how the tax system sees it when you register with them that you are married.
We were married in may, there are no children involved yet. I just want to be ready if when we register we owe them money...God forbid.

You should be able to use €4400 of your wife's standard rate tax band to move that much of your income from 41% to 20% saving yourself about €900 a year-Get on to the revenue asap

You cannot be taxed jointly until 2010 if married in 2009. However you may, after the end of 2009 request a year of marriage review. If tax paid singly in the period from date of marriage to 31/12/09 exceeds that which would have been paid in the same period had you been taxed jointly, then a refund would be due. You can file joint assessment request via form IT 2 where you will find an "assessable spouse election form".
