New York Muslim Mayor

New York, the largest city of the United States of America, an emblem in itself for what that great country truly stands for, has just voted its first Muslim mayor and given two-fingers to the phony corporatised factions of the Republican and Democrat parties.

A self-declared Democratic Socialist, labelled by opponents in media and political spheres as an ‘extremist’ and ‘terrorist’ for propagating such radical policies as affordable rent, grocery co-ops, and equal rights for all.

Congratulations Zohran Mamdani, this is a victory for the people, I wish you well.

"Baby, I'm from New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand-new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York" - Empire State of Mind

(just a little sing-along to celebrate :) )

Why does the election of a new mayor in a city in a foreign country matter to us here in Ireland?

It shouldn't. But I find it almost impossible to avoid it in news media.

Probably the fact that he identifies as being a socialist and has been labelled a 'terrorist' and 'extremist' for doing so, and the fact the people of New York rejected the efforts of the financially power in the media and politics is news-worthy.

Still dont get why some people here care so much. Yes its in the news a bit (not that much tbf), like lots of other things in the news from around the world.

But unlike, say, war - why should we care?

It's the richest city in the world. It's economy is 4 times bigger than Ireland and the State has 28 Electoral College seats so the story is being spun as a shift away from Trump... but New York always hated Trump and was always Democrat so it's not as big a story as it's been made out to be.

After the US War of Independence when the British were defeated by French money and French weapons and French military expertise and French soldiers, with some help from about 30% of the population of the 13 Colonies, those 13 Colonies owed an awful lot of money to the French. Specifically Connecticut owed the lions share and there was no way of Federalising the debt. The debate around that and how the debt could be more fairly redistributed among all the States led, directly and indirectly, to the creation of the Federal Reserve and the current US federal monetary system.

Thomas Jefferson, the chap who wrote most of the Declaration of Independence and was instrumental in the structuring and writing of the US Constitution (and who owned lots of slaves), being a good white Anglo-Saxon Protestant man wanted to ensure that all good white Anglo-Saxon Protestant men remained equal and free and said that if the Fed was set up and fiscal union happened (I'm paraphrasing here big time) that the Capitalists would use their money to subvert and control the democratic process and take real power away from the people.

He wasn't wrong.

Probably more significant is Democrats winning governorship of swing state Virginia and electoral changes in California getting the nod.
If Democrats can get back control of the House of Representatives in next year's mid-terms and put the Senate into deadlock then that could be important for Ireland and global economy when it comes to reigning in Trump on tariffs etc.

Admittedly I don't follow these things very closely but from my high level view of it, this seems like more of an internal battle within the Democratic party than any victory over Republicans. The Democratic nominee beat the former Democratic governor. I doubt the Republicans will be spending long analysing the results here, but the Democrats sure will.

Much more important. In particular the election of a moderate in Virginia is, in my opinion, very significant. The Democratic Party needs to get away from being the Party which thinks gender identity is a national issue.

Correct. However, rather like the election of the Eirigi-lover to the Big House in the Big Park, such outcomes don't inspire the same amount of gush as the exciting fact that a Muslim has been elected Mayor of New York. So let the Guardian-loving bunnies have their moment of rapture, they're quite harmless and, from time to time, moderately entertaining.

(incidentally, it's reining-in! Leave the reigning to King Charles III and Emperor Donald!)

I think it will be very interesting to see what happens New York in the coming years. My tuppence is on investment going down and unemployment & crime going up. Where will us Irish go then for those shopping trips?????

Mamdani acknowledged himself that "you campaign in poetry but you govern in prose".
Crime and unemployment have gone down but a fair bit of that is down to just pricing poorer people our of the housing market. There's a direct correlation between how equal a society is and the crime rate so increased spending on welfare almost always results in lower crime.

That said some of his policies are stupid and just populist.

I agree. But coupled with increasing spending on welfare, I can see reduced policing and a return of those broken windows..

It doesnt
It does to some people.

A lot of men I know are very interested in soccer teams from England, despite being hostile to the idea of supporting the same players when they are playing for England. The also don't support teams from this country no matter what the sport.

My daughters get very invested in the utterances of "celebrities" with no particular expertise or experience in the topic at hand, usually a topic which has no bearing whatsoever on my daughters, but they have no interest in politics and the decisions of the government in their own country which have far more of a bearing on their lives.

My younger son has no interest in sport or celebrities but is very interested in US politics.

There's no logical reason for much of what matters to us.

None of it really 'matters' to us here in Ireland. Its media driven entertainment. Thats what it is.

Paper never refused ink in the old days, bits and bytes fly hither and tither these days painting screens and ads must be seen and paid for. Storms in someone else's teacup a lot of time.
