New Teak Door - how best to treat it

Hi

I just got a new teak door installed, a very modern contemporary design, its untreated bare wood and I really like the colour (it looks like a light oak) I want to keep that colour but when I did a varnish test it went a dark mahogony colour, I used clear satin Yacht varnish, I've been on the phone all day trying to find out how to keep the colour whilst protecting it against the elements. I've been advised decking oil in clear, boiled linseed oil or teak oil. I've been told all varnish will darken it even the clear stuff. I think they all might darken the wood and after I spent E40 on useless yacht varnish would like some advice before I go buy more stuff.

A neighbour has a similar door but its turned a silver grey from the elements so has gone much lighter I woudln't mind this if it was protected but she can't remember what her guy did, she said it was treated in some way with a water based treatment!

Any ideas, as I really need to do something quickly before it rains,

I used Sadolines Nature range in a clear colour on bare teak. It gave it great weather protection without changing the colour to a deep teak colour, but it did change the colour from the bare natural wood colour so maybe this is still not the product for you but certainly worth checking it online. You may be able to use the varnish you already purchased at a later stage on outdoor furniture.

I put teak oil on my gates and side door. But ... I wish I had put sadolins from day 1.

The teak oil worked very well initially. The side door and gates looked fantastic until the winter took its toll.

They have faded to a mixture of teak and grey. I have to admit, I am not a happy camper with this.

I would like them to be the lovely warm tones of teak that they started out with.

I did, I thought, hire a painter (who had nothing to do with the original job) to sand and sadolins my wood but despite having agreed a price and him ringing me to confirm details, I haven't seen or heard from him since July 2010. It is not my nature to ring him and find out why not.

The recession in Ireland is clearly over!

I have used sadolins nature and it did have a lovely colour but unfortunately it did not last very well (maybe you are happy to give in a coat each year). If your varnish has a UV filter it should be good, Sikkens do a very good range and light oak is lovely on teak but again it won't be the nice golden colour that it is now.

Teak is natural and it will darken with light, if left untreated it will turn silvery grey and it will be prone to cracks but it will still not effect its life span/preformance

Any finish will change the shade of the wood. teak will be a Dried wood. if you wet your finger and streak the wood this will be the natural colour. any varnish will bring out its natural colour. you are looking for the impossible
