New RTE Radio 1 schedule

A few observations....

RTE appear to feel the need to go head-to-head with Newstalk on some timings. Claire Byrne is a big loss, in my opinion. She will be a big draw on Newstalk. Starting "Today with David McCullagh" at 9:00 instead of 10:00 seems a deliberate attempt to avoid drift to Byrne's new program after "Morning Ireland".

As for McCullagh. He is a class political journalist and presenter. But, in the Jeremy Paxman "raised eyebrow" mould. Remains to be seen how he will deal with the broader magazine trivia of daytime radio.

Oliver Callan is now, arguably, the biggest thing on Irish radio. He in untouchable. (Listen back to his eviceration of Miriam O' Callaghan and Simon Harris on last Friday's "Callan's Kicks".) The new 10-12 slot is a no-brainer from RTE's point of view.

Liveline..............oh, dear!

Louise Duffy. No reflection on the presenter, but an hour of spinning discs on daytime talk-radio is an abuse of licence-payer's money, in my opinion. Documentary hour? Why not? There's little enough "built radio" on RTE. Too much cheap live radio.

Drivetime: Another show whose timing has been changed to match Newtalk. Still excellent radio, arguably better with the new team of presenters.

Inside Sport: Newstalk has shown with the excellent "Off the ball" that you need total anoraks with a profound knowledge of sport to make a non-commentary, let's-talk-sport program work. RTE's offering doesn't have this. The time slot seems too much like filling a gap.

Late Debate: With Cormac OhEadhra back in this slot we're treated to constant interruptions by the presenter, redering the "debate" part of the title utterly meaningless. Does he ever listen back to his shows and note the amount to time he talks versus his guests? Terrible radio. Pity.

Said exactly that to my wife last week.

Really tired also of this asking questions and interrupting the guest almost immediately....seems to be across the board with RTE "talent" thinking they're the next Brian Farrell.

Its the "talent" believing the show is about themselves and using the slot to promote themselves and their views,. Impossible to listen to.

I’m addicted to radio. Have been since I was a teenager listening to Radio Luxembourg late at night. My staple now is talk radio - RTÉ 1 and (more so) BBC Radio 4. A lot of BBC Radio 3 too. I would give up tv long before radio. It’s way better overall.

I think that ONE hour of music is a welcome change to all talk radio, at 3 o clock , to be fair it's a welcome change to another Ray Darcy like program..
I would not mind if News talk did the same...

Amazed that John Creedon is not even in the top 10 top paid RTE presenters
His is the only show I deliberately listen to on RTE. Other than that it's NewsTalk in the morning with an occasional listen to RTE Radio1 during the ads, and NewsTalk and Today FM in the evening with an occasional listen to RTE during the Ads. I haven't recalibrated my evening commute listening since Kieran Cuddihy left.

Kieran Cuddihy is not bad on Liveline ......so far at least.
Not a fan of ads .... Purple

Evidently, someone higher up the RTE hierarchy regards him as acceptable. (I can only assume that the person in question is either stone deaf or a close relative - or possibly both!) He is utterly appalling.

Agreed.

A late-night radio “debate” should be calm and considered. In addition, after it’s finished, you should feel like you’ve learned something.

It’s none of the above.

"Eviceration of Miriam O' Callaghan" :D:D . Is this intended as irony? It was massively toned-down compared to his previous take on that insufferable presenter, with overtones of "I'm in the institution now too so I'd better go easy".

Callan’s Kicks has a new slot at 14:00 on Saturday. For those who listen via podcast, it makes no difference. For those who listened live on Friday, it’s a bit of a graveyard slot.

I was rather disappointed that this morning's "Today with David McCullagh" started with a slot on the tragic car crash in Louth on Saturday evening. After the extensive coverage across RTE's news and current affairs programmes both yesterday and this morning, there really wasn't very much left to report, so all that could be offered was the ritual and very predictable RTE "how do you feel" interviews. (What exactly does the interviewer expect the interviewees to say, other than express the predictable and rather clichéd statements of shock and sympathy on behalf of their local community?)

Perhaps I watch/listen to too many news and current affairs programmes, but for me it was complete overkill and rather pointless. It's not really DMcC's forte either, although he handled it with his normal professionalism.

Credit where credit is due.........

David McCullagh is handling the magazine type fluff and the heavy news driven stuff with equal aplomb in his new Today slot.

such as why there were 6 people in a VW Golf etc.
We are always told that "now is not the time to discuss this". But this is the best time.
Like all the big crashes in Donegal over the years. Yet they still hold international car rallies. Do they really think young people go and see these rallies without being influenced in their own driving on narrow roads with big bends ?

Rte will be happy to show the rally though without comment on such things.

Indeed.

But I miss the first (and normally best) 15 minutes of Oliver Callan's former show.

The new scheduling doesn't suit me, so I've lost Ollie for good.
