New Power Shower not functioning properly

A friend has just had a new bathroom fitted. The power shower is one of those fixed to the wall ones with quite a wide flat shower head. The problem is it doesn't always work when you turn it on - the pump doesn't start up but works if you turn the bath tap on for a couple of seconds, then it's fine. Any ideas about what causes this, is it just a water pressure issue? Thanks in advance.
 
Your friend has probably had a positive head pump fitted instead of a negative head pump. For the shower to work it must have a flow of water going through it, i.e. why when she turns on the bath it starts to work. If the pump is still in warrenty, get it changed out for a negative head pump.
