I have the chance to buy the following ex-demo. PC at a
discounted price and have two questions:

Any idea what it should cost?
It doesn't have DVD-RW - (minus) format. In practice, should that make much difference?

Here is the package:

Phillips iQon AMD XP3000+ Power PC package with DVDRW and 17' TFT monitor.

Detailed spec:

AMD XP 3000+ Processor.
512mb RAM.
Massive 160Gb Hard Drive.
Philips DVD+-RW Drive.
Philips 17' TFT Monitor.
Educational Software Pack.(Titles Vary).
Child Protection Software.
Premium Games Pack.
Microsoft Works/
TESCO.NET Software.
LogitechOptical Mouse.

Thanks for any replies.

Marx Computers do a similar system for €755 (inc VAT) plus €110 for a DVD+/-RW and €475 for a 17" TFT (all inc. VAT) in case that's of any use to you for comparison purposes:

Go to www.dell.ie - they really have got to be very good value and you can customise exactly what you want, how much is your demo costing?

I'm with podge there.

I bought a similar type of "bargain" before but in the end it just wasn't as smooth as a brand name version.

Get a brand name.

The price is also excessive for a desktop, E750 should buy you a pretty good spec these days, and I'm not so sure about buying a PC from Tesco! I think there into bites, not bytes!

It will cost about E350. Is this good for the aforementioned spec?

Also, I currently use W 98SE and know nothing about W XP.
Does it contain Internet Explorer and Outlook Express? I have many, many emails which I want to keep. Which is the easiest way to transfer these onto the new machine?

I also have many Word 97 documents. Does XP have an updated version of Word 97 which will support these documents? Again, how should I transfer the information to the new machine?

Thanks again.

Hmm If you can buy the spec that you have specified (lol) for Eur350 as I've copied out below incl a 17" tft monitor, buy it now or let me! I can only assume it has Windows XP given the spec, don't worry about Win98!
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express will be there. You say that it comes with Works software - some of the versions of Works contain a full copy of Word (Word 2000 probably) which will be backward compatible with Word 97. As for getting the old docs onto the new PC, a few old fashioned floppy discs would probably be easiest - I think Win98 pc's sometimes had problems with USB? and I presume you don't have a CD writer on it.

Eur 350 for that PC is a giveaway methinks.

Re: PC

Forgive the cynicism, but it seems a suspiciously low price! Are you sure they are genuine? Is all the software properly licenced?

great price

a 17" TFT monitor normally costs €400 and up. You are getting a goo PC thrown in as well.

Hiya
