New Derelict Property tax to replace Derelict site levy in 2026

If Revenue are as thorough with this as with the Property tax, Ireland will collect quite a lot!

Great to see Revenue are taking over collection and enforcement of it. They might actually do it unlike the councils. It should have been in Revenue's hands from the beginning. Anyone with half a brain knew that this tax wouldn't really do anything once the councils were in charge of it.

Have a semi d rental, attached is a vacant derelict/vacant house, all attempts to get him to fix it up fell on deaf ears.
Hopefully the Revenue will make him see some sense and either fix it up or sell it.

For some reason reminds me of this exchange from 'Braveheart'

Longshanks
: Archers.
General: I beg your pardon, sire. Won't we hit our own troops?
Longshanks: Yes, but we'll hit theirs as well. We have reserves. Attack.

Bear in mind that the plan is for Revenue to do the collection.

The registration of derelict sites will remain with the 31 LA.

If the LA don't add a property to the register, the Revenue can't collect the tax.

Last year, there were five properties on the County Galway DSR.

Bear in mind that during a ten minute walk through Tuam or Ballinasloe, you could probably find dozens.

What might be the reasons they are not being added to the register? Who has responsibility to nominate a property in the first place?

Anybody. You can contact the LA and report what you feel is a derelict site.

But LA staff make the actual decision to add a property to the official register.

They write to the owners first, to warn them of the impending addition to the register.

That alone may cause the owners to act.

Galway City publish the register:

They are much more active than Galway County.
