I'm circa 10 years behind you, while I haven't given it much thought but starting to...
When I retire my current thesis is to give something back to the community, something aside from my professional career. After 25+ years in IT and while no doubt that could contribute income wise in retirement, I'd like to focus on other skills I have gained over my half decade on this sphere.
I'd like to think that I'd look to contribute to Men's Sheds, local intiatives or even just simple things like D.I.Y or car maintenance etc. Hopefully I'll be in a position to do this gratis...

)I think my SIL just applied to the local university. It didn’t seem difficult.
Board membership, many companies and charities are looking for active board members. Not sure how to get into that.
Only retired about 2022 and mainly through ill-health. Would probably foolishly have continued on for longer were it not for the illness. Haven't missed it at all, but the atmosphere in the department had started to turn toxic because of a very bad manager, so probably got out at the right time.
As mentioned by others above, the social interaction has started to disappear, as I have seen with my adult children. Not so many opportunities for social events, and it looks as if there is not much interest either, which is a pity.
I do like volunteering when health permits. If you are anywhere near Kildare then Kildare Animal Foundation or Kildare Wildlife Rescue or Littlehill Animal Rescue as far as I am aware are always looking for volunteers. DSPCA and Dogs' Trust in Dublin also. I think some of the hospitals need volunteers also.

Board membership is a bigger job than I’d want. Although I wouldn’t rule it out.
Saw a webinar on it recently. By CAI. Board members in public sector. Theres a state body that does applications. Publicjobs.ie
Think I’ll try ucd for invigilator. I’m guessing teachers have the schools sorted.

Standard work days are two examinations per day, typically starts at 8.30am and finishes between 5pm-6pm.The rate of pay for an invigilator is €121 per day (€17.29 per hour) (pro rata for half days or shorter exam sessions - Trinity.

For sitting down and doing a sudoku for 3 hrs... Then lunch then sitting down for another 3 hrs. I could do that.
I'm around 14 years retired and I'm struggling to remember if in that time if I've ever set the alarm since I retired
So much so that when I had to replace my alarm clock a good few years ago I just went with a clock

Tons of IT companies out there who will "bodyshop" people into public sector roles as PMs etc if that floats your boat, short term contracts and if you don't like it, walk away.
Local Enterprise usually have panels of paid mentors for SME buisnesses who apply for grants as it's often a condition of grant acceptance that the work with a green/lean/sales mentor.

What does this involve?
Apologies, jargon.
If you are an experienced Project Manager, Business Analyist or just have a lot of experience and leadership skills in certain areas, there are a lot of IT companies who have framework contracts in place with Quangos and state bodies so that when those bodies need someone to, for example, lead or support an existing project or jump in to try and help a failing one, those companies provide those resources.
Outside of core Department civil servants, quangos such as the NTA are mostly staffed by external contractors provided by 3rd party companies.
I couldn't and I'm retired (and not working anymore). I social three days a week and enjoy the rest for the other days to do something I want to do but put it off cos I couldn't be bothered and I have another 10 years to think about it.
