New Brown Bins

Got a brand new Brown Bin last week, to put our teabags, coffee grinds and chicken bones in (no grass this time of year, of course).
On coming home tonight, I noticed that about half the neighbours have put their brown bins out for collection tomorrow.

We have only got a square of mouldy cheese and and three quarters of a sausage that the dog wouldn't eat in ours.

Are we missing out on something here?

Are the neighbours dumping all their food and eggshells to justify a collection one week later?

Or is our family so disfunctional that we cannot separate out this stuff?

I have difficulty actually separating the leftovers after a meal. Should we scrape the plates and teabags onto a sheet of newspaper, ball it up and dump it in the Brown Bin? If so, am I alone in finding this impracticable?

Surely there is a simple way of separating this kitchen waste when doing the washing up?

Why do you find this impracticable? What is so complicated about it?

Galway has had these bins for years on a fortnightly collection.

We have a pretty simple system. A medium plastic lunch box type tub or something like that near the sink.

All food waste goes into it during the day. After dinner, the dinner scraps and the container get emptied onto some newspaper and out it goes.

Not a major inconvience.

Can you choose not to have one of the brown bins? Ours has been delivered and frankly we dont bin very much food at all and all the green/grass clippings go the recycling centre nearby.

Can I call the Corpo and ask them to take it away?

My parents asked if their brown bin could be taken away as they compost everything. DCC basically said "no" as they could not make exceptions and the more bins left out for collection will encourage more people to recycle.
Brown bin is now in their attic and used for storage!

As a matter of interest if people dont use their brown bins how do they compost cooked foods which arent supposed to go into normal composting bins in the garden?

Same here. Except its like a tiny brown bin. You can get small degradable liner bags for these too. We don't have much paper, or newspapers.
