Hi, thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

I'm nearing 35 (one month out), so thinking of getting health insurance for the first time. Non-smoker, no major health problems. Herself is 30 (non-smoker, no major health problems),maternity is likely so be on the cards in the near future - should we be signing up to a policy together, or is there no benefit to this? Living in Dublin 12.

We are somewhat undecided on semi-private vs private. I'm an introvert by nature so would probably be happier in a private room tbh.

Okokokonic,

There is no benefit to signing up to a policy together.
Regarding maternity cover, there is a 1 year wait before cover is allowable for new customers to health insurance.
The popular option nowadays is to go the public route for maternity. Semi-private or private is expensive and there is no guarantee that
a private or semi-private room will be available on delivery date or that the selected consultant will be available for the birth.

The following plans are worth considering as first time plans, semi private room covered in private hospitals.
1. VHI One Plan 250; price 832pa; all public, private and some Beacon hospital cover, private excess capped at 250 x 2 max per year for all admissions, day case excess 150 per procedure. There is no excess to pay in any public hospital.

2. Laya Essential Health 300; price 895pa; all public, private and Beacon hospital covered, cardiac cover in Blackrock Clinic and Mater Hospital.
Private hospital excess capped at 300 x 2 max per year for all admissions, day case excess 125 per procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital.

3. Irish Life Benefit plan; price 899pa; all public, private and Beacon hospital covered, private excess capped at 200 x 2 max per year for all
admissions. Day case excess 125 per procedure in private hospitals. No excess to pay in any public hospital.

The following plans will fully cover a private room in a private hospital if required.
1. Laya Control 300 Create; price 1079pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech
hospital excess 300 per admission, day case excess 125 per procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Good day to day cover
included, refund of 80 per consultant visit, 30 per gp visit, etc.

2. Irish Life Select More; price 1127pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and Beacon hospital covered. Private hospital
excess 150 per admission, day case excess 75 per procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Very limited day to day cover.

3. VHI PMI 44 16; price 1154pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech
hospital excess 150 per admission and per day case procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Very limited day to day cover.

Cheaper plans would have a higher excess to pay in private or hi-tech hospitals on admission or per day case procedure.
You both can choose different companies or different plans if required.
