I used to live and work in England and have recently received correspondence from the Inland Revenue about a shortfall in my national insurance contributions over about 5 years to date, since I ceased working in England and returned to Ireland, which amounts to £1666. The payment of this is entirely voluntary but should I or shouldn’t I? Considering that I have about 30 years of my working life left and the major demographic changes that will have taken place – will there be a contributory state pension at all at that time and even if there is, what will the retirement age be - I am in a quandary whether to bother paying it or not.
