No. I was not asked to verify it. Just got the following notice.

They also revert back to your account once your card has been verified by the payment processor. You can check the reversal date in-app by tapping the transaction. The reversal date is in the 'Status' section. These transactions will appear as 'Card Verification' in your app.
If there's a duplicate transaction, contact the merchant to resolve it.
This does not describe what happened. I have had card verifications before e.g. when registering to bid at an auction.

Card verification
When you add a new card to a payment service like PayPal, Google Pay, or Apple Pay, the payment processor may initiate a small transaction to verify your card details. These verification transactions usually charge nothing or a very small amount (a few cents).They also revert back to your account once your card has been verified by the payment processor. Pre-authorisation
A pre-authorization is a temporary hold on your card, often used by hotels or car rental companies to ensure sufficient funds. We can’t cancel a pre-authorisation hold from our side. It can only be lifted when the authorization expires or if the merchant releases the funds.If there's a duplicate transaction, contact the merchant to resolve it.
