Music clips on laptop

My Brother bought a new Dell laptop and when he plays music on the computer it constantly clicks on both the internal speaker and external speakers when connected. The clicks are not very loud but quite annoying if you want to listen to music. It does this whether you play the music from the CD drive or from the hard disk.

Does anybody know what could be the problem?

Try this
1. See if there is updates avaiable for the device and install them.

If that fails do the following

1. Click Start button, type Device Manager in the Start Search box, and then press
ENTER.
2. In the Device Manager dialog box, expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
3. Locate the audio device that was included with the computer. Is there a
yellow triangle with a explanation mark (!)?
4. Right-click the device, and then click Properties.
5. Click the Driver tab.
6. Click Uninstall.
7. Make sure that the Delete the Driver Software for this device check box is
cleared, and then click OK.
8. Close the Device Manager dialog box, reboot the laptop.
9. After reboot the OS should detect new hardware and install the drivers for it.
10. Once Install new drivers is finished play the sound file again.

Alternatively consider dumping windows and install UBUNTU. Far better.
