MP4 OR IPOD whats the difference ?

Can someone tell me what the difference beween MP4 player & an IPOD ?
My niece got a MP4 player from the usa .

mp4 is a file format which will play on a of mp4 players, including (but not restricted to) the iPod, which is a brand name manufactured by Apple.

People often use the term generically, a bit like we used to refer to any kind of vacuum cleaner as a Hoover.

MP4 is a video format. BTW.

Ipods are fancy looking but are restrictive in the ways you can move files to and from the device.
MP4 generally describe generic devices that allow play of audio and visual files and normally allow easy transfer of files to and from PC.

For sure a lot of so called MP4 players can't play MP4 files.
