Moving from Northern Ireland to Civil Service Position (hopefully)

I am Irish, but have been working and living in Northern Ireland for 8 years. I am considering a move to Ireland, engineering jobs in local government/public service pay well, so hopefully a suitable position will come up soon. I am of the age that I soon hope to start a family (next year or two away), so I am curious of a few policies before I apply for jobs.

I have searched local authority/government websites and cannot find any information on:
  • Maternity leave? How long do you have to work before you are entitled to time off?
  • Maternity pay (do you get more than stat) in local government jobs? Again, how long do you have to work before you can get entitlements?
  • I haven’t paid any PRSI (having worked in NorthernIrealnd), can I claim maternity benefit? Can I use NI contributions?
  • How long before you can take a career break?
Gosh, having read this back, it looks like I don’t want to work at all!!! Seriously, it’s just that you must consider all these things before changing careers/moving country, nothing like a bit of forward planning.

Dont mean to put you off, but look through all the other posts about getting into Public Service. Its very hard and can take ages-alot of panels are for two years. So concentrate on getting the job first, then worry about the details!

I fyou really want you can give the public jobs offices a ring 00353 1 858 7400. theyre very friendly and will do their best to answer your questions.
