Mould on ceiling

Hi, We live on the top floor apartment. We have an extractor fan in the bathroom, obviously just under the roof. Recently mould is starting to form on the ceiling around it. Does anyone know who is responsible to get this fixed? The fact that the leak is in the attic which we don't own. It is us or the management company? We own our apartment, but pay management fees.

Are you sure there is a leak? It could be fan is not on long enough to take away the moisture. You can set the timer on this to expel for longer.

If it is a leak then the managemnet company should sort this out for you.
 
This is more than likely due to inadequate ventilation as Niallers suggests, and not a leak. Is there a source for air to enter the room to replace that being expelled by the fan? Without this, the fan will struggle and you will be left with a damp problem.

There is no other ventilation in the bathroom. All we do is leave the bathroom door open after we take a shower. I removed the ventilation cover yesterday and hoovered the fan. I hope this helps.
I am just not sure what side of the ceiling the water is coming on. Is it the steam forming on the ceiling or is it overflowing from the attic.
 
Yeah its the steam from the shower condensing on the ceiling. A common complaint in apartment shower rooms. A dilute solution of bleach in water can be used to wash away the mould, which you should do, as once it gets a hold can quickly spread.
 
If the moisture was coming from above the plasterboard, you'd be more likely to see discolouration long before you'd start to get mould.
 
there is a mould spray available in most DIY stores

be careful with door open as mould spread to other parts of the apartment.. best get the extractor checked out
 
You may also have a problem with the plasterboard around the vent hole not being covered with insulation in the attic.

The cold plasterboard will tend to attract moisture to condense in the present climate long after the shower fan has stopped.

Good morning everyone,

Thank you all again for your great insight and advice.
I wiped the area with the bleach solution a few days ago. The mould marks have gone.
Where as before there was a small 'water stain' on the ceiling now it looks to have got larger.
I have attached a photo to show.

You can't link to a file on your local machine. You'd have to upload it to an image share site.

Usually these fans have a pipe that vents out through the roof. Perhaps this isn't there or theres a leak in it. Causing water to drip back down.

Regardless, I'd contact the management company that there many be a leak in the attic somewhere.
 
leave the fan on for at least 15 minutes after showering to dispel steam,best thing to do with mouldy plasterboard is have it replaced,airborne fungus can lead to respiratory problems(if there is a major mould problem)
