Motorbike Insurance

Hi, looking to obtain a realistic motorbike insurance quote for my 17 year old who is on a provisional license. Have obtained quotes from a two of the specialist motorbike insurance companies which are quoting numbers around €2,500 for 3rd party (excluding fire and theft) for a beginner 125cc bike worth around €2k. Appreciate if anyone could kindly steer me in the direction of a more realistic quote please ?

What do you mean by "realistic"? Actuarially a teenaged biker on a learner permit and the largest engine allowed is a huge risk and will be priced accordingly. All you can do is shop around. I suspect that many insurers won't quote at all for such a risk. It used to be the case that there was only a handful of insurers that covered bikers at all (e.g. Carole Nash and maybe one or two others). Not sure what the state of play is these days. Maybe a scooter/moped/50cc might be a more realistic option?

Carole Nash and Principal Insurance are the main go-to for bike insurance - both are brokers, underwritten by Axa. Liberty used to quote for bikes,not sure if they still do.

Similar to new car drivers, first year insurance is very high. Getting a full licence and staying claim free is all your son can do to reduce the premium.

It used to be the case that there was only the one! Norwich Union/Hibernian. And they charged accordingly, no matter what your licence status and years of experience. In my case they merely wanted to know how many CCs the bike had, and basically charged a multiple of that - typically 3x. So my 600cc cost about IR 1800 each year.

For the OP, I can only say that Carole Nash seem reasonable with me these days, but I've a lot of years at it. 17 and provisional is not a good place to start paying. The transition to full licence status will make a difference.
