Motor Insurance Industry - Ridiculous Price Hikes, Again!

Hello,

Looks like the motor insurance industry are at it again, with extortionate price hikes !

This pops up every few years, the Goverment ultimately gets involved, and things settle down... then, when the spotlight moves onto something else, the insurance companies get back to their old tricks, if trying to rip people off.

My renewal arrived in, recently, from Aviva. It was almost 30% higher than the premium I paid, last year.

I had no claims, so continue to have a full NCB, no points on my licence, still live at the same address etc.

I did change car, shortly after I paid my premium last year, paid an additional €50 at the time, but I've factored that into the calculations, to arrive at a circa 30% increase that's now requested.

Suffice to say, I was far from happy, so stated to get quotes elsewhere, including through a couple of the well known online brokers (Chill etc). They've all come back with even higher quotes !

While I acknowledge that there's inflation to provide for, and even if I accept that the companies are trying to improve their margins a little, I'm still not seeing any justifiable reason for more than about a 6% - 8% increase.

Any thoughts on what I can do here ?

Sure, I can kick up a fuss and threaten to move provider, but that will only result in costing me even more more money.

Complaining to politicans is a slow and usually unproductive process, unless there's large numbers of the public complaining, it's best election time, or the politicans are being directly hit in the pocket, themselves.

Thank you.

25% increase - due this month. No changes in circumstances.

The hassle of moving to another provider is an absolute pain when you are time poor

@Bluefin and the insurance companies know that, so try to exploit us !

I maintain a personal policy of moving, even if the best I can do is get a quote that's equal to my renewal, just to make a point with my insurer.... If they don't value my business, then they lose it.

Renewal with Aviva in 2025 €313.22. Paid it.

Renewal in 2026 €342.50. Used their quotes engine and paid €310. And, as per every year could add in NCB protection without exceeding their minimum premium.

I find there's usually a reason for hikes in premiums outside of 'just because we can' and claims (either on the policy or as a whole) A car moving into a different rating category, penalty points, age, added driver, etc etc.

Surely that shows that competition is working?

It's fairly easy to set up a new insurance company in Ireland.

If it is that profitable, overseas companies will come in.

It's an impossible business with a history of failure - PMPA, Insurance Corporation of Ireland, Quinn Direct.

We still have a claims culture. High claims costs and high legal costs.

You also have to pay for the uninsured drivers. But at least that cost should come down as the Gardai now have number plate recognition linked to insurance companies.

If your time is worth more than the 25% increase then just pay it. If not then shop around. As mentioned above, most or all service providers penalise loyalty and inertia.

Yes, they seem to be making progress on that even if the numbers were still very high last year.

Just renewed via AA….easier than I thought it would be. 10% less than last year.
Even if my renewal premium was lower than the previous year, I'd still do a quick shop around and also check what the premium would be with the incumbent insurer as a new customer quote.

@GSheehy Thanks - I've just run a new quote on their website, it's €66 cheaper than the renewal they've offered.

It also proves my point, about them trying to rip me off !

No, it just proves the point about a lot of service companies having better rates for 'new' customers each year and they just make you do the dance of requoting. Had same issue with energy provider lately. Thought I read something about this being looked at but if it's a commercial decision by management and it's good for shareholders then not sure what can be done about it. We all just want to be treated fairly but to beat the system we have to put in the work.

I was logged in to Bord Gais last month to check my bill and noticed the link to 'Bord Gais Rewards'. That led me to a discount code for Zurich. I was shopping for home insurance at the time and managed to save €160 by switching to them. I'll be looking for a quote again from them when my car insurance is due. Appreciate you have to be a Bord Gais customer for it to apply. Made a point too, of ringing my old insurance company to tell them what I was going to pay to Zurich :).

Just before Christmas, Aviva issued me a renewal quote of €540, compared to €491 paid the previous year. I went shopping and most quotes I got came in or around this level (FBD surprisingly were in the €600s for some reason) but I was able to get cover with 123 [dot] ie for €453 ultimately. Aviva did call me just after the renewal date and I told them what I was now paying.

if we see the industry working in harmony, to extract more than reasonable profits from the customer base. I consider that to be cartel like behaviour.

Wow! That is clearly a criminal offence which you should report.

Fully agree with this. I have long called for mortgage lenders to be banned from discriminating between new customers and existing customers.

I would extend it to all utilities.

Unfortunately, when one company does it, the others have to do it to compete.

We are with Allianz and my motor insurance had dropped for my renewal next month , we have the house insured with them also and get a discount on both.
