Most affordable way to approach planning application

What do people think is the most affordable approach to applying for planning permission? I have a site ready to go, from the area, good road frontage, but not a huge budget for the planning application and drawing of plans........ around 2k
I want to build a fairly modest house, nothing fancy, 3 bed.
Just wondering in other peoples experience what a sensible approach would be ?

Nice to have a good site. Phone up your planning office and make appointment for a pre-planning meeting. This costs nothing. Here you can discuss your plans and the council will advise you how to proceed and put forward a planning application that meets local planning requirements.
