Mortgage term mix-up

3 years ago I took out a mortgage, the original term of the mortgage was 25 years. After 1 year, I payed a lump sum and asked for the term to be reduced to 20 years. I received a letter saying that this was done and the letter outlined my new payment.
On visiting my local branch last week, it came light that the "job was only half done" and I still have 22 years left on my mortgage whereas I understood it to be 18 years.
Do I have any rights in this situation? I would have been paying more in interest than if the term was 20 years as I understood it to be.
How should I deal with the institution ? Any advise would be appreciated.
