Some amount of memes of healy rae saving himself from the titantic with fist raised but everyone else drowning around him.

There's a fine line between their customers and their constituents. Sometimes it's not clear who they are representing.
All politics are local. They know this, it's ingrained since childhood and to be fair, have never represented themselves other than what they are,which is shrewd political operators.
They speak plainly and without airs and graces and call a spade a spade.
They run with the fox and hunt with the hound and are as finely attuned to what the Kerry voters want as a piano tuner is to a slightly out of tune key and more fool them if they fail to heed it.
Their loyalty is to their base not to a Govt or a party. Worse fools Martin/Harris for expecting anything else. This whole fiasco was avoidable if only THEY had listened to the initial pleas for help.

Thats the mythology they have built up about themselves which they love to propagate but its not actually true.
If they are so shrewd and only care about their local base why did they go into government in the first place?
Why did michael accept a junior ministry only to throw it up at the first sign of unpopularity?
Thats not shrewdness but venality , a strange sort of rural backwards venality albeit.
Why are the other independents and michael lowry sticking with the government?
because in the long term their backing for government through good and bad times has proper value.
Nobody else will trust the healy raes in the future for their vote , they were only taken at their word by this government because of the reputation of jackie healy rae who stuck with a highly unpopular government because he had given his word and got deals for his constituency. But danny and michael have destroyed that trust and nobody will buy their vote again because their vote is worthless.
Jackie Healy Rae was an absolute chancer .
While a member of FF during the Ard Fheis he used to sleep on the floor of our rented house ( one of the lad’s father was head of Kilgarvan FF cumann ) whilst claiming expenses for the Burlington ! In fairness Jackie used to treat us all to free drinks in The Hill pub in Ranelagh on the Sunday morning .
The sons learnt a lot from him

I do not agree,
I cant see FF winning more seats than FG ever again He is well regarded by FG if Fg are in a position to form next Government Healy Rea will be one of the first they will talk to,
FF are like an old business where no one in the family want to come home and take it over and the owner is quite happy to keep it ticking over while he/she get a little help from the family as it dies out while another fitter Business down the road takes over anything that is worth keeping,
FF can no longer get any good Quality people with FF DNA to run for them and have any chance of getting elected,

So it looks like this narrative that if danny healy rae withdrew his support then michael would lose his minister job is false.
Probably another fiction propagated by the healy raes to justify voting no confidence and pulling out of government.
Also his son revealed that michael is very down about pulling out of government so he knows this could be very bad for him long term. If those protestors were not outside the dail gates last tuesday he would be still in government.
