Is it too early in the year to be getting mice? I think I saw one last night in my sitting room, I didnt actually see it but I saw something move across the floor! I cant cope with them, they freak me out totally, I wont go into a room if I think there is a mouse there! I have a 3 bed semi with a garage and I think they get in under the garage door and then into the house but I dont know, I bought a plug in thing and plugged it into the garage but obviously if it was a mouse I saw then it didnt work did it? can anyone give any advice on how to keep them out of the house, will I set a trap in every room downstairs? I have 2 dogs so a cat is not an option as they hate cats! I want a mouse free house!! Also the thoughts of them weeing and pooing over my carpet in the sitting room sickens me, will I have to get my carpet cleaned?? HELP

Set some traps in the garage and one in the house just to see. If you catch anything then you will know soon enough if you have them.
more than likely it was a mouse. (could be worse it could be bigger, with a longer tail and a shorter name!

In just the last two days my cats have killed three mice. I live in the countryside.
Obviously the cooler nights have the little darlings thinking about their winter accommodation.
Seeing as you can't get a cat, set traps everywhere. If they get in and breed it will be harder to get rid of them.

I'm in the country too. Our cats have been presenting mice (along with their usual birds and shrews) for the last few weeks. There are plenty around.
We're not in the country (Dublin centre) but have seen a few recently in the house. One was being teased by the cat(!) and another was dead (obviously scared to death by said cat). I feel exactly as OP does ... can't stand them ... scared stiff. Yet I don't want to hurt them. So we called a Pest Control guy and he has laid poison (but not the blood thinning one). This poison will put them to sleep .... raises their body temperature apparently and they just go to sleep. I hope I can believe him. Couldn't stand to think of them suffering but want rid. MouseMan will return on two weeks to see how we're getting on.
I've had mice on and off over the years but never downstairs - they were coming through the airing cupboard (through unsealed holes). Anyway we blocked up all the holes and we about eight weeks ago we had 7 of them all under the stairs. I too have a plug in thing - which is constantly plugged in, but the mice still came in through a gap in the skirting board. We got those clicky traps and baited with chocolate (safe and sound I think they're called) got them all.
I've now got a mint herb plants at the front door and back door - mice don't like mint.

Thanks for the tips on the mint plants. I am off to buy them in the next few days. I had mice last winter for the first time in the 8 yrs I am in my house. Took ages to catch them and dread to think of the damage they did to the insulation, wires, etc while the were running around.

I had one of those plug-in, noise emmitting things before... it was left plugged into an extension cord in the middle of the kitchen floor. I came down one morning to find a mouse sitting on it!!
Thanks to all for the replies, still no sign of my mouse so I think it may have been my imagination getting the better of me, however I am fully prepared for the mouse invasion this winter, I have a trap set in the garage, one in the utility, one in the kitchen and one in the sitting room and all have a generous amount of chocolate on each so I am confident!
OK I guess I didn't phrase that very well. Yes I do realise that the mice will actually DIE as a result of the "POISON"! Hopefully, though, they won't suffer a lot of pain before they die (which they could do if Warfarin was used). There's no point in causing pain if it can be avoided.

What is a shrew Caveat? Would that be something that looks like a mouse but with a pointy face? My cat caught something like that a couple of weeks ago but I still don't know what it it was.
OP, I feel your pain, I have a totally irrational fear of rodents.
White toothed shrews are a new mammal not thought to be in Ireland but were identfied recently enough through owl droppings (read this story ages back). For reason there nose makes them a little nicer than mice! Id prefer one of them to a mouse (not sure exactly why though) as I'm also scared stiff of mice which is odd for a suposedly manly man like me!

New to Ireland and its introduction is unlikely to be good news for native species. :mad:
Grey squirrel, zebra mussel, mink, rainbow trout, giant hog-weed, Japanese knot-weed, rhododendron, Christmas tree farms, leylandii (the good news is some weird disease has attacked some of them fatally), etc. unwelcome arrivals.
