Dear AAM,

I am thinking of going to Miami/Florida Keys for 2 weeks end Dec/Early Jan. Would anyone recommend this for a nice sun holiday, which is the best way to go there, from Dublin or London as no direct flights from Ireland.

Also is the weather good enough to lie out, and what about evenings does it get very cool.

Any advice much appreciated as must book soon

Many Thanks

yes.when i lived in the u.s i was based in miami(cruise line)down town miami is full of spanish ppl.bay side is a great place to shop.also hyalea.weather is good.south beach is great.2 bus rides from down town miami.or a 20 min taxi ride.just be careful of your bag and pick pockets.

Can highly recommend this area for a holiday... personally think the best way is Dub-Lon-Miami for flights, alternatively you can go Dublin-Atlanta and then internal flight to Miami.
Lots to see in Miami..... Coconut Grove great place for eating out etc.... South Beach great also..... would recommend a trip to the Everglades.... Billie Swamp Safari do a great trip. Fort Lauderdale is also worth a look its only a short drive from Miami and Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale is lovely and there are some great trips on the Florida Intercoastal available.
Florida Keys are great the drive to Key West is fantastic and spend 2 days in Key West.... Islamorada is a nice place to stop for a relaxing day too.
Weather can get a little cool in the evenings at that time of year but still very comfortable.... you should still be able to go to the beach everyday.
So jealous..... Enjoy!

There's a lovely spot called Duck Key on the way down. We stayed [broken link removed]

I think it is best to fly from Dublin so you can do immigration here.

Last time we flew thru London we nearly missed our connecting flight as it took us over 2 hours to get through immigration in Miami.

We find the best route from Dublin is

Dublin-Atlanta-Miami and then we also fly on to Key West from here.

We generally spend 2 or 3 weeks in Key West - don't miss this fantastic island - and spend more then 3 days here!!!!

I personally think Miami is only worth spending 2 or 3 days in and then get on the road down to the Keys.....!

enjoy!

Been to Miami a couple of times and really could not take to the place, it felt unsafe, I jsut didn't like the vibe.
A few miles up and you get to Fort Lauderdale and that is fab, there felt safe and had a brilliant vibe. I've stayed in the harbour beach on the sea front and the hard rock casino hotel inland, and enjoyed them both.
If you are in that area i would consider checking out a few 3-4 day cruises (from miami, fort lauderdale), they are usually good value and a lovely way to relax. Normally a day trip to nassau and maybe one other stop, i've seen some reasonable value around recently, but of course its all date based (4nt cruise on 5-jan with carnival to mexico is showing for $219 - but of course there are other charges)!
Flight wise, i'd go with the dublin to US option, immigration here is so much handier than havign to queue for hours in the US. Check continental, they often have good value, and Newark is a reasonable airport to navigate.

you should think about going on a cruise from miami.some cruises are very good value.

I know it is a little premature but after this Christmas I am already thinking of next Christmas. My plan all going well is that next christmas I treat my family to a holiday in Florida. My kids (now adults) range in age from 17 to 27 so hopefully not really into theme parks more interested in water sports and shopping and sun (coming from Ireland we are in short supply of that). Can anybody help me decide what part of Florida would suit us best so I'll know what is the best city to fly into I have heard that the west coast is warmer than the east coast at this time of year.

florida is a beautiful place (all of it).

why dont you do what we did , fly into orlando , sea world is fantastic , water parks are the best in the world and the theme parks are well worth a visit ( im 29 by the way )

rent a car, drive from there to miami stopping overnight someplace, then on to the keys where its just paradise

If you are going to key west (which i thoroughly recommend - one of my fave places in the states) check out this place

we have stayed here, it's amazing. there is a deck with private jacuzzi. great location too, it's a short walk away to all the action.

cruises at the moment are so reasonable. worth checking out - they are finding it hard to fill the ships because of the recession in the states.

was on a cruise to the bahamas and thought it was really great.

Thanks for that Limerick how long do you think we would need to spend in Orlando to get a quick visit in and when you say the keys are paradise can you elaborate on what you consider paradise. I like the idea of driving down to the keys not that interested in Miami but would like a beach stop over on the way down.

Ya its a 7 hr drive down to the keys from Orlando ( i did it this day last year). But i have to say i hated Miami.

For beaches try key Largo or go route 1 and get a beach on the West coast of Florida.

Key west is heaven. One of the nicest places i've ever been.
