My wife and I are jointly assessed and just wondering about the following? Thanks.

1. Can you claim left over cost after claim paid by Irish Life for your kids physio/GP treatments?
2. Can you claim for prescription costs for all meds prescribed by Doctor? I didn't think it was possible so haven't put them on health expenses section past few years.

1 - Yes, a lot of people don't actually realise that you need to reduce the amount of your health insurance from the portion that you put through on your med one. You do however.
2. Yes you can claim for scripts.

Yes.
You can claim relief on the cost of health expenses. These can be your own health expenses, those of a family member or any individual’s, as long as you paid for them.

You cannot claim relief for any amounts that you have already received, or will receive from:
  • any policy of insurance
  • a public or local authority, for example, the Health Service Executive (HSE)
  • any other source, such as a compensation payment.

Yes.
You can also claim relief on the following if you are prescribed, referred or advised to, by a practitioner:
  • drugs and medicines
  • ...

Yes, just do a spreadsheet. List all the costs, then list what you got back from your health insurer. Then submit to revenue

Only submit the amount not claimed back from the insurer
You can claim all medicines over the €80 DSP limit
Some items covered by the health insurance are not covered by revenue (like dental or glasses)
Some items are covered by revenue, like medicines, but not by the health insurers.
Private scripts (not covered by the DPS) are covered by revenue.
So be careful with your total amount submitted, only deduct money back from the health insurer that relate to the allowable revenue costs. Be sure to claim for all that is allowed.

Being jointly assessed you can include all dependant children costs too.

You can claim all prescription costs, including the €80 AFAIK
Correct.

Incorrect. If someone is benefitting from the Drug Payment Scheme such that their monthly expenditure on prescription meds/devices is capped at €80 then they can claim tax relief on the €80 but nothing more, since they're not spending any more than that!

I was trying to focus on non DSP and private scripts. Just not to forget about those.
I don't understand how that relates to this.

If the Drug Payment Scheme applies how would anyone pay more than €80 for prescribed meds/devices? Or does the scheme not cover certain meds/devices?

The Drug Payment Scheme doesn't cover all medication, so it's possible to spend more than 80 euro per month.

For example, prior to last June, some HRT medications weren't on the DPS list. I used to pay about 105 per month for prescription medication.

Since June 2025, HRT is now free for all holders of a DPS card.

There is a list on the HSE website

I was wondering that also regarding the DPS cap of €80.
We pay the DPS total of €80 pm due to ongoing medication of my husband. This year my daughter had some medication prescribed not covered on the DPS so I presume that this can also be claimed on revenue.
