Medical Doctors and General Arrogance

Are Doctors in this country starting to become the new clergy? Recently visiting a relative in hospital and I was astounded by the arrogance of some of the medical staff. Reminded me of years ago when people would genuflect to people of the cloth! A lot of the patients were almost genuflecting to some of the medical staff.

That's nothing new, we were always deferential to authority figures and some doctors were always more than willing to play that part.

Most consultants have the God complex and believe that good manners is not required. They can be very obnoxious but thankfully people are more inclined to question them (and sue their asses) these days so they are improving, well the younger ones anyway.

Can only speak from my own experience with 2 relatives currently undergoing cancer treatment (this includes contact with two professors) and a recent emergency with my son at St. Vincent's.

Every single professional we came into contact with was friendly, helpful and caring. Could say anything negative about any of them and ditto our GP.

Most consultants ? That's a generalisation.

IMHO, many people in all walks of life 'believe that good manners is not required'.

I think its an irish thing, we always felt we should genuflect to doctors, priests, even cops ect..where the fact is these prople are paid their wages by us so it should be the other way around!

Everyone's wages including yours are paid for by someone else so why even go down the road.

There are good doctors and there are bad doctors. Just like in every other profession or business.

I have had good and bad experiences with consultants. I had a relation who was very seriously ill and her consultant had zero bedside manner but was regarded as the best in his field. A member of her family complained and he told her that his job was to get her better not to be her friend. He did get her better. I wouldn't choose a consultant based on their personality. A GP maybe but when it comes to specialists, I only care about how good they are.

but it dosent hurt to have some basic manners when dealing with people..

Some of them are arrogant knobs who deserve a kick up their pompous behinds; others are very kind, thoughtful and reassuring. It's not really fair to generalise. If people want to kow tow and genuflect to a consultant who is being paid handsomely to look after them, then they're foolish to do so. If a consultant expects this, then s/he's an eejit as well.

even cops

I was walking along a footpath built for two abreast walking recently. Two Gardai walking along footpath side by side, one female. Every single person stepped out of their way. Gardai both oblivious to this fact and just kept walking in a straight line.

That is a great line.

It reminds me of a teacher who told us that his job was to educate us and not to entertain us. Which, of course, we all thought was hilariously funny.
