Mature Student Application - Medicine

Hi there,

Doe anyone know if there's any hope of applying as a mature student for a degree in medicine. I have a BS Finance from the US, but have always wanted to be a doctor and feel that I'm young enough to still have a go!

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Deborah

AFAIK there are only 4 or 5 colleges that do medicine. Your best bet is to contact them directly and see what their criteria are for mature students. I think they are very strict though (otherwise everyone would go off and do a degree and reapply as mature students). Are you a US citizen or an Irish citizen? This has a huge bearing on the fees you would pay.

Isn't there a new scheme for post-graduate students applying for medicine?

That's interesting Purple, do you have a link? The only thing I know about this is that there were a few people I was in college with who were hoping to do medicine by the 'back door', but I never heard of any of them following through afterwards. The theory at the time was that you had to do science and get a good degree. This is all heresay though, which is why I'm suggesting to DDD to contact the colleges directly!

There are graduate entry medicine courses at three universities now. You'll have to sit GAMSAT exams and be very convincing. If you can get related work experience, it would help your case.
Contact the medicine departments directly for details...

Thanks for the info all. I would be looking at Trinity or the Royal College as I'd be commuting from Tullamore and UCD is too far out. Have got information from both schools.

Am an Irish citizen but only came back to Ireland in 05. You have to be here 3 years before qualifying as an EU student again, which thankfully I will be come 08.

Although if I apply to the graduate program I would have to pay full fees, whereas the undergraduate would be the free tutition scheme. So even if it's an extra year I think I'd go that route, as I don't feel competent enough in inorganic chemistry to just jump in! It's been too long! ;-)

Thanks again for all the advise.
