Maternity Pay - Employer claiming 'old handbook'

Hi there,

My friend is currently working for X Ltd. She has been working there since March 2008. She is now three months pregnant. She has a signed (by HR) employee handbook from X Ltd which states female employees on maternity leave are entitled to "paid leave".

She has received the following from HR when she brought up her maternity leave:

There is no statutory entitlement to paid Maternity Leave in Ireland and the X Ltd has never paid Maternity Leave to any employee. You must have an old Employee Handbook which seems to be misleading. I have put the current Employee Handbook in the post to you today. This Handbook is the relevant one in relation to your terms and conditions.

Background info - X Ltd bought the business from someone else two month's prior to my friend's start. However she definitely has a contract stating she is entitled to 'paid leave'.

Any advice on whether she is entitled to paid leave?
