Maternity pay- breach of verbal agreement

I was just wondering if anyone could give me advice in relation to an employer not honouring a verbal agreement we had in relation to a % of my salary been paid while I was on maternity leave. I know that economic conditions have impacted their decision but I have been with this company over ten years, am in a senior role, and was informed by way of letter one week before my expected due date that they were not in a financial position to pay me anything.
Is it worth my while legally pursuing the verbal agreement we had?
