Maternity benefit claimed retrospectively ?

Hi All,

Hope that you can help me with this. When I was in my third year of my degree at college, I had my daughter. I was a full-time student but had been working part-time in the evenings and weekends for about 3 years previously with an average of about 20 hours a week. When I rang the Citizens Advice Bureau, they told me that I was not entitled to Maternity Benefit as my official status was 'full-time student'. Being young and naive, I didn't question this at the time and lived at home with pocket money off my Mum & Dad. My daughter is 5 now and I've since gone on to work in full-time employment but I can't help thinking that I should have been entitled to at least a partial benefit at the time. Is it possible to put in a claim this far down the line, do you think? I am single and have a big mortgage and childcare bills so even a small sum would be very welcome in my current position.

Many thanks for your time.

I would imagine that it's unlikely judging by this but you should contact Welfare just in case.
