Marital status

Hi.
Can somebody please advise me what a person's marital status is if they are separated from their partner after marriage, and the partner subsequently dies. Is it still separated, or becomes widowed?
This query is both for tax return purposes, and for the census.

That's an interesting question.

The department of Social Protection will pay a widows pension to someone who is divorced and whose spouse dies.

I'm open to correction but widowed would appear to be your status.
