I am going to be made redundant after 6 months working for a company and will be paid 21k as an ex-gratia payment. Will any of this be tax exempt given that i am only employed six months - ie does it qualify as redundancy or is it taxable ? i have have never claimed redundancy before and have a pension from a previous employer valued at 20k and i am in my 30's. I know in redudancy there is 10k basic increased by 10k less present value of lump sum of pension.

either way you should consider yourself somewhat lucky - if your company had a 6 month probation period (or longer), which is pretty common these days, they could have let you go without further payment.
