Hi, if a child gets 3 in a primary school sten report (well below average) despite getting extra assistance for dyslexia how likely are they to improve for secondary school ? Will they be able for state exams ?

3 is low, but it’s a single test on a single day, you can’t say what can happen in the future. Was it in English? What are their other scores like? Did the get assistance with the test, or just general assistance in advance of the test?

Age 12 5th class, Maths and Irish. English is a 5 but a lot of help to get that was previously lower.
Worried about secondary. Has dyslexia diagnosis.

5 is approaching average, it’s hard to judge how children will progress or where they are at a point in time. All you ca
really do is look for good support and see how they progress. Be good to have an honest and open chat with teachers about it. Do they think k that results affect abilities etc.

Yes parents are concerned as he has had extra help from a resource teacher in school, but scores have dropped in two subjects. So looks like more difficulties as work gets harder. Might be even more difficult with secondary.

Is there anyone who has seen improvement. Just wondering if any suggestions apart from grinds ?

One of my kids has dyslexia and reeally struggled in primary school because it took her ages to learn to read and write fluently. She continued to struggle throughout secondary school in some subjects (maths, languages) but once her reading and writing skills improved caught up with the rest of the class in other subjects and was well above average many. She comfortably got the points for her first choice course in university.

My advice is try not to worry and most importantly try not to stress out your child. But put all the supports you can in place. Check that your choosen the secondary school has good supports and stump up for grinds as necessary. Join the dyslexia association (https://dyslexia.ie/) and send your child on their excellent secondary school preperation programmes place. Research the DARE (disabiity access programme) for universities because your child is likely to qualify fo a place on reduced CAO points. They may not need this option, but having it open to them will reduce your and their stress. Consider asking the secondary school principal for an exemption from Irish because this may give your child the space to concentrate their efforts on subjects they are good at.

Our youngest is autistic and dyslexic and scored well below average in these tests in primary school (2/3). We did speech and language lessons along with loads of reading at home (it was only comics at first but reading is reading). We definitely put a huge effort in and now he's sitting his junior cert, higher level English, one of his favourite subjects and consistently scores >70% even in pre exam. He loved the paper last Wednesday so we're hoping for the best.

It can be done, it's definitely not easy but it's all about letting them read what they're interested in and word games like scrabble and wordle are great.

Best of luck

An issue i had with being neurodiverse and the standard testing in school and led to low results was the speed nature of the tests. Has it been considered if the low scores are more down to a mismatch with the different elements of the test and are less likely to appear in tests of a different format

My son was getting 7/8/9s in his tests 1st & 2nd class. Had a brand new teacher in 3rd class and he had gotten moved to a class with a lot of additional needs where the teacher spent more time breaking up fights than teaching (to be fair, she was new and should never have been given that class, she definitely needed more experience to cope with it) He dropped to 3 in maths, and 5/6 in others. The school never rang or discussed the results, only just put it on a report with a note "progressing well" !
He moved schools and is in 5th class now and back to 7/8/9s so definitely some results can be a product of the environment.
