I expect that my heating bills in the house this coming winter are going to be pretty high. I am going to close down a few rooms around the house and switch off the radiators something I said that I would never do when I saw my parents end up living in 40% of their own house.
I am looking for recommendations for a low cost, energy efficient portable heater that I might use in a room that I will use occasionally. Any thoughts?

I don't think you need to live in 40% of your house, I would advise you get an energy assessment to look at what energy you use and where you use it - with simple measures you can cut your energy bills significantly - cost of an energy audit should be around €400

Look at some of the funky heating controls that can improve efficiency by sensing outside temperature, also Thermostatic rad valves, zoning your house with two port valves controlled by a timer and room stat, have a look at your heating water if it's dirty, flush it to make sure the heat is running smoothly, cylinder stat connected to a two port helps reduce hot water heat wastage, insulate the cylinder, try to improve house insulation and check for draughts, if you keep the heat in, in the first place you should reduce heating cost, have a look at http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk loads of info there.
As for a portable heater i wouldn't recommend gas due to safety, but i use a fan heater from B&Q called airforce, it's got a good stat on it, hope this helps but for the really simple measures you will have to pay Mr enerygyrating €400 to find out, but i would rather buy a jumper, Gary.
