Looking for a good lawnmower

Hi,

Looking for a self-propelled, petrol lawnmower with a big box. Not worried about the cost, but want something that will last a very long time. Any recommendations?

We have a Stiga ourselves and its been fantastic, never had an ounce of trouble with it - we have about 1/2 acre of lovely green grass to cut and it flies through it no bother
 
My father always recommended anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine - my lawnmower is now about 15 years old, and still going strong!

We have one of those and it's a fine sturdy mower. Only problem is that the self-propelled bit doesn't seem to be working - it barely helps and this is one heavy mower. maybe a bit of WD40 on it first?

Have it ten years, cutting about half an acre and I give it unnatural abuse and it's good for another ten I'd say. If you want your lawnmover to last get an aluminum deck (alloy deck).

The box on the Harry empties without removing which is very handy.

+1 and they are much cheaper now than they once were.

You should get a decent B&S engined one for less than €400.

+1 on an aluminium deck too.

The 'gear' for self propulsion often goes eventually BTW - but it could be an easy fix and is worth getting someone to look at it.

Husqvarna and Honda yokes can be great alright - but they can be expensive too.
 
Bought a top-of-the-range Mountfield 555 yest. Incredible machine. 10 year warrently, Honda 160cc engine and in-built mulcher. The job! (Grass still need to be cut though ;) :D ). Tx again!

Make that statement but neglect to explain why?

I know a guy who does gardening and landscaping for a living and he swears by mulching. He has 1 ride-on and 2 petrol mowers, and all mulch.

The downsides of mulchers are :

Clippings all over your house, especially if you have kids.
More frequent cutting or you will be left with trails as long grass doesn't mulch well.
Unsuitable for wet weather.
Unsuitable for heavy, lush grass.

I was initially a fan of the mulcher until I discovered the downsides ! I switched to a ride on with a collector a few years ago and have never looked back. In any case a mulching kit was available as an extra if I wanted it - this is also an option with some self propelled mowers.
