Sorry if this has been answered before, but the search functionality doesn't seem to be working for me.

Is it a good/bad idea to add money to your credit card account before going away. I realise this defeats the purpose of credit, but I advised someone not to do it as it's your loss if the card gets stolen. But the bank told them it was OK! Anyone know for sure?

I couldn't think that would be true. What is the difference between using a card fraudulently where in credit or in debit; it still should be treated the same. Anyhow, if you cancel you cards reasonably quickly, it won't make a difference anyway unless the thief knows your pin and empties your account.

MBNA definitely state that if your credit card is in credit and its lost/stolen and used fraudently then until the credit expires its the owners loss. I used to use MBNA but just use my current account now. no charges in euro zone or UK. You would either have to have the account in credit or agree an overdraft facility.

This issue is covered many times already. Use the Google search approach outlined in the link that I posted above. And read the terms & conditions of your specific card as different card's have different rules on this and other matters.
