Hi . I am living at home with my parents. The council are reviewing rents at the moment and have sent a letter to say they want to see my p45. I have been made unemployed last month.

Am i totaly wrong in thinking this is asking too much? Surely this is too personal. on my p45 isnt there information on my earnings, tax payed and so forth, surely a receipt from the social welfare payment is enough to prove I am unemployed, which I provided last month. Last year when I was working they wanted to see my wage reciepts, which usually held information about shares in the company and payments to union as well as a whole lot of other info. I'd appreciate your opinion on this as I am thinking of refusing.
thanks.

Hi Treefrog,

Obviously they need this info in order to decide on the rent that is to be paid from your household. Did you or your parents declare your income while you were living with them. Council rents are normally assessed by the amount of income into the household.

hi eastbono

yes,i know that, but wouldnt a social welfare reciept show how much I am earning.I am on unemployment benefit .i would have thought that was enough information. So you think I am over reacting in not liking the idea of turnin over my p45?

If you already supplied a social welfare receipt it seems that that is not enough. A receipt just proves that you have received a social welfare payment for the dates that appear on it (one week).

Just give them what they're looking for - it's always simpler in the long run.

You could request a letter from social welfare stating that you are unemployed, what payment you are receiving, how much you are being paid by them & for how long, & staple it to your P45.
