Life Assurance -- Mortgage -- Show me the money

I am not sure if I have my facts right here but did Eddie Hobbs say (on a show a few weeks ago) that you could save money by getting your Life Assurance from someone other than the bank when going for a mortgage? ... i.e. getting it online somewhere?. If this is the case does any one know where to get good value Life Assurance?

Buying mortgage protection life assurance from the mortgage lender is normally more expensive than buying from other sources. The good news is that you can always switch to a cheaper provider even if you are already on a policy bought through your lender. Just keep the lender in the loop. There are many existing threads on this recommending different providers which you should be able to find by browsing/searching. This thread in particular is worth reading.
