Leaving job-reference

I'm leaving my job today :D It was just a 6month fixed term contract. I got on great with the role, but not so much with my line manager! My question is this, do I ask for a written reference before I leave or ask for permission to put her number on my cv? Would a written one be better as I'm not sure what she'd say about me, bit of a personality clash! What should I do?
 
Its normal to ask for a reference in writing when leaving. It is easier to do it when leaving ,then ringing some time in the future looking for one.

It is standard practice your line manager should not have a problem with it, even if she is glad to see the back of you .

References follow a fairly standard format ,if your line manager for some reason was unfair in a reference you would be entitled to approach her boss.
 
Just to update people, I asked for a reference before leaving yesterday, only to be informed that they are no longer allowed to give references! If a future employer wants a reference they have to go through the HR dept. who would get some sort of tick the box sheet filled out!

HR are sending me out something to say I worked there form date X to Y, so I have something. The job was actually part of work experience from college, the whole point of which was to get a reference which is why I find this annoying! I have other references from previous jobs, but not in this line of work...

She didn't even wish me good luck in the future!
 
Yeah it's unusual alright, there's never a reason for bad manners! I don't know what I ever did to upset the woman, but people from work in general reckon shes just not a nice person...glad to be out of there!
 
if its a big company generally the line manager will not be allowed to provide a written reference, it will have to come from HR.

Is there no form to be filled in as part of your college placement? That could be used as a reference.

Was the assignment arranged by your college? If so, then you should point out that it might not be suitable for placements in future years.
