Hi, was recently in america and bought a laptop (about $1000), someone said we could possibly get the government tax back on this? it was bought in california so that was an 8% state tax added on aswell. Just wondering how I could go about applying for this if it is the case. spent about $1500 in goods while we were there, have receipts for most of them. Of course would declare it too of course....

Hi, thanks for the info, have looked into all other related threads, dont think it can be done. (laptop not for business purposes). oh well - we still have the weak dollar! C

Good idea, reclaim 8% state tax and pay 21% vat

I would not have thought reclaiming US state tax or not would have any determination on whether Irish VAT is due in any event.

As the OP has already bought the laptop would Irish VAT not automatically have been due once it was brought into the country?

I don't think the OP has any interest in pursuing the irish vat side of things
