Landlords solicitors fees

Hi,

My landlord asks me to pay his solicitors fees every time I renew my residential tenancy lease. Is this allowed?

Not sure if its ridiculous but personally I've never been asked to do that and I'm renting for 5 years in different propertys.

I'd be a bit put out over it if my current landlord asked me to!

Very strange.....most landlords don't go through a solicitor for a standard lease (there is a form you can pick up which covers most standard agreements)

Is there something different or special about yours? Is would seem to me to be something the LL should not pass onto the tenant. But if he asked and you agreed in the past....thats why he's asking again

I wouldn't pay the solicitor's fees - this is an expense incurred by the landlord by his/her choice to have the lease drawn up by the solicitor.

He/she could easily prepare the lease him/herself, but as he/she choses not to, it's an business expense that the landlord has to cover.

This is also an expense which the landlord can offset against rental income - same as accountant's fees - maybe he/she'll ask you to pay those next!
