Son has just returned after spending four years at college and lived in Dublin. We live in an average sized 4 bed detached house, husband, myself, son and daughter and two big dogs who are both more or less house dogs and confined to kitchen/dining area. Lately iIfeel every room in the house is full of clutter and now that my son is home its ten times worse. Our bedrooms have built ins but with all the clothes, Dv's and electrical equip I just cant keep the place looking tidy amymore.

Was thinking of extending and converting the attic but as we are both 50 and will have too much space in a few years is it worth it or is there any other way round it. Have done two or three clearouts to charity shops already but not making a difference.

I think extending your house will only resolve in 'More space to store more clutter'
When having a clearout you have to be truly ruthless.. You say you have all the built ins' full of stuff.. Ask yourself when was the last time you opened the doors and really actually used what's in there.. If not within the last year.. Then get rid of it!
Do you have outside storage space.. a garage or shed?

Are you sure you didn't get mixed up and that you aren't talking about our house ;)

You might get some help from [broken link removed] or www.ikea.ie have some good storage solutions.

Its very true about the clear outs but it might be worth your while to go to a some day and sell off all your extra stuff. I regularly do trips to the charity shops also.

If you insulated the attic as much as possible and organise shelving you might be able to use it more efficiently. The ad on telly for the looks interesting especially when one is over 21 :D

Car boot sale.
Case in point - I recently bought a 20ft x 10 ft shed and guess what, It's almost full and the clutter is already building up in the room that we previously had as storage..

Car boot sale I tells ya.

I agree that you need to get rid of more stuff, not add more furniture. You say you've already cleared out some stuff to charity shops, but I would guess that what you've actually gotten rid of is the "obvious" stuff. You need to go through each drawer and cupboard and wardrobe one at a time and decide if everything in there needs to be kept, donated or chucked. You might be surprised at how much stuff can be chucked (or recycled) - old telephone directories, broken appliances, once potentially useful junkmail....

It's also more manageable mentally if you go through one drawer/cupboard at a time, you don't have to do the whole house in one go. And get the other members of your household to do the same with their own stuff (spread the joy!) so you're not doing it all yourself. It might take a few weeks or even longer, but it will feel like spring cleaning and you'll soon get on a roll and it will feel very satisfying. Also, donate bags or boxes of stuff every week during the process, don't pile them all up and wait until you have a car-load, that way you'll feel the benefit of the clearout immediately.
