Hi,

We are building a house with a fairly big kitchen/dining/living room.
My wife wants to tile the kitchen portion and put wooden floors down on the dining/living room section. Will that work ?
Or should we tile all of it OR wooden floor all of it ?
We have 2 young kids < 4 so I dont think all tiles would work too well.
The kitchen will be either solid wood or cream vinyl.

any advice appreciated.

we have the same, with tiled kitchen and wooden living room and we are about to re tile the whole lot.

now this is partly because the living room area is pine flooring which hasn't stood the test of time.

But even still.... our living room is where the table is and a couch. A lot of activity here and I dont' think any wooden floor would be suitable.

I think and entire tiled area is best for these high traffic/high spillage areas!

re the kids.... a solid oak floor is going to be nearly as hard to fall on as a tiled floor in reality..... and unless they are at the learning to walk stage I wouldn't worry about a tiled floor from a safety point of view.

have same thing in our house. Kitchen tiled and living room laminate floor. Solid marks v easily, constant maintenance, yearly re sanding etc.
Laminates on market now look just as good and are v hard wearing.
Nice contrast too having the difference in the room.
