kitchen-diner or interconnectin living-dining?

Have these options for a rental:
small separate kitchen and interconnection dining room and living room
or
small kitchen opening on to dining room and separate living room.
Which would you choose? It's for a family, small kids.

Small kitchen & diner, separate living room would be my vote.

I too would say kitchen & diner combo with seperate living room. With small kids you'd probably want them where you could see them when you were cooking, and they could be playing or doing homework at the table while you're getting dinner.

Also you might want to have a quiet cup of tea in one room while the kids watch tv or play or whatever in the other.
