hi, quick q?? We got a new kit fitted in Sept, dark wood, at the time couldnt afford the nice countertops so just got a cheap dark laminate which looks quite nasty now,
is it an expensive job to get it replaced?? also anyone heard of any good deals with granite or marble at the mo??

Johnny, Just spotted that you 'might' be in the know about granite!!!! Then again-I could be all wrong!!!! In any case -we are thinking of putting in a multi stove burner in our sitting room and we will need to possibly replace the hearth that is there-we are thinkin of a looking for a piece of granite to rest the stove on and a piece for the hearth. DO you know of anywhere that I might be able to get a price for this? I am in North Kildare.

Apologies to original poster for taking this slightly off her topic-tried to send this to Johnny as a pm but his pm box is full!!!! Popular guy!!!!LO

Thanks

hi johnny, based in dublin, prob looking for a light coloured granite/marble, i think you can get a type of stone(quartz) countertop as well. I'd also need someone to take out the original countertop and fit the new one, cant use the kit fitter, he was a nightmare.

Any granite supplier will arrange installation, including removal of the old countertop. If any repairs to your kitchen units are necessary, however, you may need someone else at hand.

Dont know if it will be possible to remove counter top without damaging tiles ?

theres an upstand as well before the tiling starts, so was hopin to get that replace too

Granite upstand for an average L-shaped kitchen (5-6 metres of counter) about 200-300 extra, depending on size of course. Removal of old upstand should not be a problem. :)

have a look at this website (no connection to me), these are a good idea and very nice - basically gives the appearance of real stone but costs much less. this is what we are going to use and have bought 2 lengths of 3 metres of the maia vulcano design for £500 in total from the recently gone bust MFI in the UK. really looks the part. www.maiaworksurfaces.co.uk

Can you get these worktops here in ireland ?

inhouse do a version of it called getacore, about 650 for 4 metres.there are other brands available in this country as well, its usually called solid surface worktops.they have a chipboard core with some form of hard plastic covering about 6-8mm thick.i have used it before and they do turn out well but you can tell its not granite.we actually tested it recently in the workshop by placing a hot iron faced down on it for about 15 mins and it bulged up so not too sure how good in the long run it would be.

the worktops i bought look more like corian than granite and i actually prefer this look. they have a satin finish rather than that glossy shine of granite and have a warmer feel to them. they came in 3m lengths and weigh 60 kg each so good heavy stuff. i think they are 42 mm thick.
flahers2, try this irish company www.leinsterwoodworks.ie .
they are based in Emo, Portlaoise. again i have no connection but i was at their place at Easter and they seem pretty good at their stuff. they have some good looking sliding door wardrobes too of interest to me.

samm, i dont think i will be doing any shopping at [broken link removed] . the prices are way high. ie. the range cooker they are advertising for €3685 reduced from €4005 ! can be bought in the UK for £2,200 !
this is another great website for some kitchen worktop ideas etc www.worktops.uk.com
and that gorenje integrated dishwasher at €699 is around £400 in the UK. if i were to buy these just these two items in the UK alone I would save around 2,000 squidders !!!! that's scary.

GORENJE Fully Integrated Dishwasher (Bosch made!) FREE 2 YEAR GUARANTEE!! SPECIAL OFFER WHILE STOCK LAST.

with respect what has that got to do with worktops?

its the same with cars, tools, appliances etc in this country, yes the retailers get the blame but the problem is that if i could source the products from english distributors and not irish ones i could sell them at sterling prices, but then there could be warranty issues as most of the distributors in ireland also own the servicing companies

samm, i just assumed as you had added the link to this thread then it would be offering good value, that's all ! - just was shocked to see such high prices.

you assume wrong as its not a link for that thread but in my signature.i was offering advice on worktops as i have used them so feel free to comment on my advice all you want.

the subject is about worktops not my business

I have a big problem with getacore, work in a kitchen company and used getacore on two occasions and both turned out badly. One customer told me she only had to run a plate along it and it scratched apparently! The other customer also said it scratches very easily too. Also i don't think it's very well priced for what it does...yes it's almost half the price of granite but a laminated worktop would be better!
